James Murdoch resigns BSkyB role

Breaking News

James Murdoch is to step down as chairman of UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB, but will remain on the board.

He is the son of News Corporation founder Rupert, whose company had to drop its bid for BSkyB after the phone-hacking scandal.

Last month, James Murdoch stepped down as chairman of News International, which publishes the Sun and the Times in the UK.

He said then he had moved to New York to work on News Corp's pay-TV business.

News Corp owns almost 40% of BSkyB and had wanted to buy the whole of the firm, but withdrew its bid under intense political pressure.

Sources told Robert Peston, BBC business editor, that it was James Murdoch's decision to leave and he did so in an attempt to pre-empt further criticism.

Nicholas Ferguson will take over as chairman.
