Ministers seek Leveson core role

Breaking news

The government is applying for "core participant" status at the Leveson Inquiry.

In a statement on its website, the inquiry said it would sit at 14:00 BST to hear the government's application.

Core participants can be represented by a barrister and seek to cross-examine witnesses and make opening and closing statements.

Lord Justice Leveson is examining relations between the press, police and politicians and the conduct of each.

His inquiry will consider how far the current regulatory regime has failed, and whether there has been a failure to act upon any previous warnings about media misconduct.

A second phase of the inquiry, after a police investigation into phone hacking at the now-defunct News of the World newspaper is complete, will focus on unlawful conduct by the press and the police's initial hacking investigation.

Scotland Yard is conducting three investigations relating to the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.
