Search for ferry child called off

A search is continuing after a woman fell from a ferry on its way to dock in Belfast.

The woman was rescued and taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital but there are reports that a child may still be missing.

The alarm was raised at 18:30 BST as the ferry was coming in to dock at Belfast Harbour.

The emergency services, including a police helicopter, are continuing to search the area.

The ferry has not yet berthed but remains in Belfast Lough.

John McPoland of the Ambulance Service said the woman was lucky to be alive.

"She has been in the water for a while and you can understand that from the coldness of that water, she would have been thermic," Mr McPoland said.

"So the crew would have made sure she was well wrapped up and warm.

"The crew were concerned enough about her condition that they did alert the hospital to expect them."
